What size racquet should I get for my child?

By in2tennis admin ·

Choosing the right tennis racquet size for your child

Tennis is a fantastic sport for children, offering not just physical benefits but also important life skills like discipline, focus and teamwork. One of the first decisions you'll make is selecting the right equipment, starting with the racquet. With so many options it can be overwhelming, so here are the factors to consider.

  1. 1

    Age and height

Manufacturers provide recommended racquet sizes by age group, which is a helpful starting point. But children vary greatly in size and strength even within the same age group, so use height as a guideline alongside age for a more precise fit.

  2. 2

    Racquet length

Junior racquets range from 19 to 26 inches. Longer racquets provide more reach and power but can be hard for younger or smaller children to manoeuvre. Shorter racquets offer better control and are ideal for beginners or smaller frames.

  3. 3

    Grip size

A grip that's too large is hard to hold and can lead to wrist strain; a grip that's too small reduces control and stability. Make sure your child can comfortably grip the handle with their dominant hand, allowing a full range of motion without strain.
